SPACEMEN 3 - Walkin' with Jesus (lyrics included, 1987)

SPACEMEN 3 - Walkin' with Jesus (lyrics included, 1987) Tube. Duration : 5.12 Mins.

A brilliant and pure psychedelic tune by Spacemen 3, included in their great second album "The Perfect Prescription", released in September 1987. "The Perfect Prescription" is a concept album, "a vision of a drug trip from inception to its blasted conclusion, highs and lows fully intact". The music becomes progressively more orchestral and serene until the high of the trip, represented by 'Ecstacy Symphony'/'Transparent Radiation (Flashback)', moving on to the moment of realization where the high has faded and the comedown ensues, represented by the harsh opening guitar chords in 'Things'll Never Be the Same'. Coming down is represented in the blues based 'Come Down Easy', whilst the potentially fatal effects of an overdose are portrayed in the final track 'Call the Doctor'. The music was written by the band except 'Transparent Radiation' which is a Red Krayola cover from their 1967 album "Parable of Arable Land". Spacemen 3 was an English psychedelic rock band formed in 1982 in Rugby, Warwickshire by Jason Pierce, also known as "J. Spaceman", and Peter Kember, usually known as "Sonic Boom", who had originally met at art college. Both Pierce and Kember were guitarists, keyboard players and vocalists, so added bassist Pete "Bassman" Bain (sometimes referred to as Baines), and drummer Natty Brooker. They played together for a couple years, with extensive jams and rehearsals, but played only low-key, local, concerts, before releasing their first album "Sound of Confusion" in ...

Spacemen 3 - Walking with Jesus (Alternate version)

Spacemen 3 - Walking with Jesus (Alternate version) Video Clips. Duration : 5.23 Mins.

Spacemen 3 - Forged Prescriptions (2003) Bass - Pete Bassman Engineer - Graham Walker Guitar [Fender Telecaster], Organ [Farfisa], Guitar [Slide], Vocals - Jason Percussion - Rosco Producer - Jason, Sonic Boom Violin - Owen John Vocals, guitar [Fender Jaguar], Performer [Feedback, Vox Conqueror], Organ [Farfisa], Effects [Fx] - Sonic Boom Note from Sonic Boom in the liner notes: As I sit writing this it's 10 years to the day since we were making this record and the sun shines hard and bright just like it did at the time. The last 10 years seem simultaneously to be merely the blink of an eye and yet also a whole lifetime. Much has changed for the better and the worse. It thankfully seems a long time since the drug busts of the Thatcherite "just say no" era and its strange to remember the first ecstasy parties around this time and recall its novelty before it became a cultural icon. Its also strange how this body of material has come to be meaningful to a whole subculture - exactly the people we hoped to live, love, cry and die with. Maybe, just maybe, this is the way it was meant to be - equally sad, joyful, destructive and generative. This is Spacemen 3 in bloom, midsummer before the seeds were scattered. Right at the point where we worked together well, and, in compliment to each other. I still have strong memories of days where we would crash out listening to nothing but one song over and over making hypno-monotony from slices of hypno-monotony. Mattresses were installed ...

And The Walls Came Tumbling Down: High-Tech In Action At The Battle Of Jericho?

Despite extensive archaeological excavations at Jericho, there is no actual hardcore evidence that emerges that supports the Biblical ("Joshua 6") account of Joshua and the Battle of Jericho. Jericho was in ruins many hundreds of years before Joshua (if there ever was a Joshua) existed and stumbled across the site. So if the walls came a-tumbling down, they tumbled way before the Biblical account. Joshua and the Israelites hadn't yet been dreamt up in anyone's mythology, and those ruined walls were probably done in because of numerous earthquakes that naturally occur in the region.

However, let's play the 'what if' game. Can Joshua's priestly jazz band comprised of seven ram's horns bring down massive stone walls? Can pigs fly?

SONIC BOOM EFFECT

Here's the basic story as outlined in the Biblical "Book of Joshua: Chapter Six" (King James Version).

Now God wanted Joshua to take the 'city' of Jericho, but in a rather strange way at least for a typical military strategist. That strange bit is why God's war strategy (which surely must be perfect coming from an all-knowing deity) isn't taught in the war colleges of the armed forces of the world - I surely don't recall it having been used in any other military campaign, ancient or recent. Anyway, God's strategy, the key to the success of the siege of, or the Battle of Jericho as led by Joshua, was to apparently circle the city for six days with his men of war and seven priests carrying ram's horns. Maybe the inhabitants were meant to laugh themselves to death at such antics.

Anyway, on the seventh day, those priests, renowned musicians all, were to play those trumpets shaped in the form of ram's horns, play them fortissimo, and then some. Oh, and everybody was to shout long and loud, but not before the actual time required - dawn or shortly thereafter on that fateful seventh day (which you'd think would have been a day of rest from all that previous six days of marching 'round Jericho). Timing was everything! So you have a lot of noise - seven ram's horns making really loud trumpet sounds, and lots of shouting. Then, and only then, would the walls of Jericho come a-tumbling down and Joshua and his army could lay siege to the city and among other things grab all the city's gold, silver, brass and iron to add to the Lord's collection of treasures for His treasury. Why God needs silver and gold and brass and iron is quite beyond me since presumably He could create as much of the stuff as He wanted! Anyway, The Ark of the Covenant was also present, but what actual role it played, if any, isn't made very clear. Probably none as it was just a storage device - a portable library containing all those Biblical "thou shall nots".

Okay, so at dawn or thereabouts on the seventh day the priests played (blasted out) their number one song on the Biblical hit parade; everybody shouted (exactly what they shouted isn't made clear), and the walls of Jericho came a-tumbling down. Then Joshua's henchmen stormed the city, and except for one family, took no prisoners, putting all and sundry (even oxen and sheep) to the sword - no doubt this is where General Santa Anna got his 'show them no mercy' inspiration from at the siege of the Alamo. Anyway, then for good measure they burned what was left of Jericho's rubble (except for the gold and silver and brass and iron which went into God's coffers). Because of Joshua's actions, God saw to it that he achieved everlasting fame (though I'm not sure it's the sort of something I'd like to be remembered for in the history books). That's the Battle of Jericho in summary. So, what do we make of sound as a military weapon?

In terms of application to warfare, it is known that very low frequency sounds can create the sensation that your bowels and contents have turned to jelly. Translated, it's very difficult to be a 100% efficient soldier if you are in desperate need to go to the bathroom!

Very high frequency sound on the other hand can disorient one. A disoriented soldier is not an effective soldier.

However, we don't see anything along those lines from the front lines in any current military conflict that I'm aware of. To the best of my knowledge, sound hasn't been used to any great extent, if ever, on the battlefield, maybe because of limited range; maybe because sound doesn't discriminate between the opposing sides.

So, sound as a military weapon against a biological enemy must not be all that viable.

Still, the biological viability aside, that sort of military application has no effect on the nonliving, which I assume the Walls of Jericho were - nonliving that is.

Sound (vibrating air) is a force. It's a pressure wave in the atmosphere. Just like a water wave can push things around, and destroy solid objects (as we've all seen in recent films of tsunamis), so too can sound waves, but of course because or since air is way less dense a medium than water, the effects are equally reduced. Sound can of course travel through solids as well and is also a pressure wave that compresses the 'solid' (which is actually mostly empty space) as it passes through, just like sound travels through liquids - think of whale songs or sonar.

If you're looking at just pure air pressure, or the pressure exerted by the air in the form of the winds, I doubt whether even a massive hurricane (or typhoon/cyclone) could have caused even minor destruction to the walls of Jericho, not that that region of the world is normally subjected to such extreme weather events.

A series of F-5 tornadoes might have done the trick, but then the Bible should have given credit where credit was due - to an act of God (no need for a middle man or men or musicians). It would have been a miracle actually since F-5 tornadoes aren't standard weather issued events in the Jericho region either. When's the last time you saw tornado footage and destruction from that part of the world?

That leaves the wind or blast of a nuclear weapon, but then Joshua and his priestly jazz band would have become toast too, being within a trumpet-shout of ground zero. There would have been no survivors inside left to slaughter, and those treasures of gold, silver, brass and iron wouldn't have been worth a damn thing - just radioactive slag. Besides, there's no archaeological evidence of intense heat (vitrified or fused sand) at that site or of anything blowing up of any nature for that matter.

But that's not quite the end of the story. If it were, Jericho's walls would still be standing (assuming no earthquakes of course). There's a physics phenomenon termed resonance. Most physical objects have some sort of natural property which causes them to not only act in phase with external vibrations of a just-so nature, but those very vibrations keep on building up to ever greater and greater amplitudes. The solid object in question oscillates back and forth to ever greater extremes. If those extreme violent swaying motions become so strong that they become greater than the physical forces holding the object together, the object shatters in a resonance disaster - in other words, it suffers a catastrophic failure.

We've all heard of or seen (even if just in the movies), that parlour 'trick' where an opera singer shatters a wine glass through just the sound of her voice alone. The vibrations from her voice are in sync with the natural resonance frequency of the glass. But then again, if the opera singer sings softly, softly, the glass is out of harms way. Of course a thin wine glass is one thing; a massive stone walled fortress is quite something else yet again.

I'd suggest that not even a modern metal heavy rock band, with all the high tech available to it, even circling Jericho with boom-boxes galore, wouldn't have come close to bringing the walls down. The residents might flee in terror from the so-called 'music' but the walls would remain intact.

That's true even for other modern loud noises like a sonic boom or say the launch of a Saturn V rocket or the Space Shuttle. There's a heck of a lot of loud rumbling, but all those infrastructures in the vicinity still stand after-the-fact. The vibrations of the one either don't match the natural resonance of the other, and/or just aren't energetic enough.

It's going to have to take something more powerful than existed back then (like shouting and ram's horn trumpets) or even something we have today like heavy metal bands and rockets. If the Battle of Jericho is true, if sound really did bring down massive stone walls, then alien technology must have been employed - terrestrial technology of that era (and ours as well) just wasn't and isn't up to the task. However, given a choice of believing extraterrestrials ('God' and company) had some sort of grudge against the residents of Jericho and employed some of us humans to resolve that grudge (buck-passing), or that the Battle of Jericho was nonsense from opening notes to final coda, well you would have to bet on the side of pure nonsense. I mean is there anyone reading this who seriously believes they could, as a parallel event, fly a seven or even a seventy piece band to say the Great Wall of China and knock even a tiny section of it down just by playing a bit of Wagner, Gershwin, or even rock & roll? I didn't think so.

Speaking of Biblical sites and destroyed cities that have no archaeological evidence to establish their historicity whatever, there's the very tall Biblical bedtime tale of Sodom and Gomorrah. Those twin cities were destroyed in a rain or fire and brimstone (no earthquake or trumpets here), but there's been no active volcanic activity in that region of the Dead Sea for multi-thousands and thousands of years. Of course it might have been a nuclear weapon as some speculate that there was an advanced human civilization that existed tens of thousands of years ago that had attained such advanced high-tech (highly doubtful), or perhaps a meteor strike. Such speculation however is of no use unless an actual site can be identified, explored and evacuated by archaeologists, and that's proved ever elusive, as elusive as the ancient Lost Continent of Atlantis, the one that's allegedly beyond those Pillars of Hercules.

Launching The Dream

Day One
7/28/87
7:05 a.m.

The time has come to be brave.

SONIC BOOM EFFECT

For the first time in my life - all 22 years of it - I wake up today with this crazy-ass belief. If I can just get myself in that van, I might have a chance...to make it possible.

Today the door opens. The culmination of three years of maniacal drive toward a singular goal. To get out of this haunted house and get my band, Divine Weeks, on tour. It's all I've thought about the last three years, daydreaming in class and writing out imaginary tour dates. Toiling at my windowless shit day job, shuffling papers everyday, helping rich men get richer while my dream just sits out there waiting for me to seize it.

We've spent the last few days scrambling around. Gathering contact information of bands, promoters and press to call and radio stations to drop in on. To the Price Club to buy peanut butter and jelly, bread and Cheerios in bulk. Down to Venice Beach to buy a bunch of stolen calling cards. Then to Guitar Center with a tall tale about how we're going on a very high-profile tour promising to play exclusively on whatever gear we can scam off them. Worked too. Gave us some drum skins, some cymbals, a mountain of guitar strings, patch cords. The smarmy store manager then groups us all together and takes our picture with one of their moronic sales reps who has on about the goofiest grin you can imagine.

Tom Hasse is going to be here in just a few to pick me up so we can go rent the van. No one will rent to us because none of us have a credit card, and we're all under 25. Our friend Ron Jolly, a courier, turned us on to his mechanic who showed us how to disconnect the van's odometer so we can save on mileage charges. You get something like 500 free miles, so the plan is we'll go to about the 600-mile mark and then disconnect the thing. After the mechanic tells us how to do it, we were all quite pleased with ourselves until he turns to us and says, "But you guys do know it's a Federal crime, right?"

I started the band with two friends from high school - George and my other best friend Raj, our guitar player. In high school, the three of us were basically losers - either laughed at, dismissed, or never even thought of. Earlier this year, it started getting back to a lot of folks we went to high school with that Divine Weeks was starting to make a dent in the L.A. club scene. We'd see familiar faces come to a show, snicker and leave. Some of it was jealousy, or maybe it was a sense of order being disrupted. Like seeing Radar from M*A*S*H* play a saloon singer in a movie or something. You just can't accept it. High school's like TV a little. You get typecast. Those first few years after high school are threatening. People keep tabs on you and not so they can cheer you on from the sidelines.

The last gig we did in town was a few days ago at the Lhasa Club opening for fIREHOSE who started up out of the ashes of the Minutemen after D. Boon tragically died a little over a year ago.

Just a few months ago before a show I'd pace back and forth in front of Club Lingerie or the Anti-Club or Raji's, thinking if I fretted long enough out in the cold more people would magically appear. Of course they don't, and I head back inside, and we play our hearts out in front of eight or ten people at most.

Because the Lhasa is so intimate and we're so loud, we always bring great heartache to the soundman there, an uppity little Frenchman like the Lhasa's owner, Jean Pierre. During soundcheck, the soundman tells George he's too loud so George says, "O.K., but if I turn down any more I won't be audible." Guy marches toward George and spits out in his heavy French accent while striking a bass player's pose, "We're not going to lose our license because some silly little bass player wants to go boom, boom, boom." George just stands there dumbfounded while the little fellow pivots on his boot heel and storms back to the soundboard. So, we do what we always do. Turn down at soundcheck and crank it when the show starts.

For our encore I ask what everyone wants to hear. It's a rock star thing to say but who can resist the opportunity to hear "Free Bird!" shouted back at you? Never fucking fails. Finally, someone yells what I'm waiting for. I want to do "Dry September." It's my favorite song to perform. Raj has adopted "Dry September" as his own personal catharsis of the racial taunts he absorbed growing up Indian in England. Every time we play it, it's like we're all fighting the power of his past together. The middle section of the song is like an exorcism. As the band pounds out a strident staccato marching beat, I wail my guts out. Every night we play a different version. It just keeps evolving. Live, this is the true essence of Divine Weeks. The one song I'd offer up if we had only one left to play.

Before fIREHOSE takes the stage, Raj offers to move Mike Watt's skyscraper-like SVT amp onstage and poor waif-like Raj can't handle it and about gets crushed to death. Right before the amp topples on him, Watt's massive hand reaches down and pulls it up just in time. Watt just smiles and says "I got this one, Raj." Like he's done with countless up-and-coming bands, Watt's sort of taken Raj under his wing, and it's really had a profound effect on Raj who's now totally bought into the whole DIY approach. During their set, Watt, in his inimitable style, pays us the ultimate tribute when he says "This is dedicated to Divine Weeks," and he hits a big booming D note, lets it sustain and points at Raj. Few get it, but it was fucking high praise.

Now let me make something clear. Divine Weeks is not some big arena band on a major label with oodles of cash behind us. You probably never heard of us unless you're one of the few thousand people who pick up the L.A. Weekly, L.A. Reader or BAM every Thursday to check what's happening around town. We're not part of L.A.'s "in" crowd, and we don't have any hip cache. One of the earliest bits of press we ever got was: "These guys will grab you by the scruff of your collar and demand attention despite the fact that they look like four college Joes waiting for a bus." It's one of those backhanded compliments we've used as inspiration.

Just seven months ago, we were limping along playing late weeknight gigs with no record deal, a drummer that was never going to work out, and virtually no press at all. Just after the first of this year, we got signed to the Dream Syndicate's Steve Wynn's Down There label, found an incredible drummer, got named one of the top local bands by the L.A. Times, and we've been getting great reviews for our live shows and for our just-released debut record Through and Through.

This is not just our first tour. Aside from our drummer Dave, who's been on his own for a few years now, it's basically our first time out on our own at all.

This is not some big tour by plane or train or bus. We're just throwing two old love seats I found in my garage into the back of a Ford Econoline cargo van, putting them face to face to sleep on, and the rest of our stuff we're storing in back.

Aside from maybe Springsteen, there's no rock stars for role models. They've all let me down. It's like they all lusted after stardom and once there, looked us in the eye and then fled. I've stood there outside after shows and watch them treat fans like an annoyance, get whisked away in their limos and isolate themselves in their extravagance and wealth only to moan about it later. I'm done with it.

That's what drew me to the Do It Yourself (DIY), just-get-in-the-van credo pioneered by bands on SST Records. Although we don't sound much like bands like Black Flag, Minutemen, Hsker D, Meat Puppets and Sonic Youth, we're inspired by their ethic and aesthetic. Success doesn't come to you. You go to it. Eschew major labels. Put out your own records, book your own tours. You don't stay in hotels, you beg from the stage for a floor to sleep on. Create a community. Call like-minded bands, ask to open for them and promise to help them when they come to your hometown. Drop in on college radio stations and beg people to come down to your shows. No roadies, no high powered promoters. Black Flag pretty much invented it and bands like the Minutemen taught us how to go and do it. Mike Watt calls it "jamming econo."

Musically, we're closer to the Who at Woodstock by way of early REM. But ideologically, more than any other band, the Minutemen are the closest to what Divine Weeks' core is all about. Egalitarian, working-class, politically conscious, smart. Like us, their friendship and loyalty to each other shaped their very essence. The Minutemen were like indie rock teachers. They showed us and a lot of bands that being indie was a righteous cause - fighting the good fight against the bloated, arrogant and self-important hierarchy of major labels and radio programmers that keep good music off the air and relegated to garages.

Every time we climb on stage, write a song, meet a fan, deal with a booker or a radio programmer, we feel the eyes of the bands that showed us how to do it are watching. We can't let them down.

Once I get in that van today, I plan on never going back to school. Raj, same thing, and Dave washed his hands of school a few years ago. But for George, it's more complicated. He's got to make a decision whether or not to commit to grad school next year. He needs us to make as big a splash as possible on this tour so he can justify not returning to school in the fall.

* * *
Day One
10:10 a.m.

When George, Raj and I started college, we kind of went our separate ways. That fall I went to a lot of club shows around town, mostly by myself. I got angrier and angrier. I'd drive home and find myself pounding the steering wheel and screaming, "Man, I could do better than those fuckers! What the fuck am I waiting for?"

By that Thanksgiving, it'd become impossible to hold back any longer. I'll always remember the date. November 24, 1983. It's a typically crazed, uncomfortable holiday dinner at my house. Ten minutes of eating and four hours of waiting around. Lots of false starts and stops and frozen smiles while my Aunt Nancy sets up a photograph. "Now everyone just smile and be happy!" she'd say. Right.

My mom can't sit still and pops up in five-minute intervals to disappear into the kitchen to swig some booze and then return momentarily calmer. My grandmother, the same thing, slipping into the kitchen quickly downing some Cutty Sark and staggering back into the living room chirping, "Everyone happy?!"

As Thanksgiving dinner finally winds down, I just want to get the hell out of there. I call Raj and ask him if he can come pick me up and take a drive. When I see him pull up in his family's old Honda, I grab my pea coat and pull my newsboy hat down low on my head. I mumble a goodbye hoping to get away before somebody makes it out to the driveway and starts screaming something.

I get in and say to Raj, "Hey come on, let's go," looking back to see if I'd been followed.

"Where to?" Raj asks.

"To the top of the world," a spot up on Mulholland Drive where you can see all of L.A., I say.

The alignment on Raj's old Honda is for shit, and we roll along Sunset Boulevard almost like a crab walks - kinda sideways. Traffic is light, and we make our way through Hollywood, past the Strip - first Gazzarri's, then the Rainbow and the Roxy. Then there's Duke's and the Whisky on the left. The next block, you have Tower Records on the left and Book Soup on the right. A little further east, all on the left, is Ben Frank's, then Carney's, Guitar Center, Rock 'n' Roll Ralph's and a little further, Club Lingerie and across the street Cat & Fiddle. But just before then, we hang a left on Highland, go past the Hollywood Bowl and then take a left up Mulholland Drive.

When we get to the top of Mulholland, we pull along the dirt embankment and stop. It's cold and dry and windy so I pull the collar up on my pea coat. We walk to the very edge of the cliff. The sight of a million shimmering lights and all of L.A. is there for the taking.

"So, how's the college life, my friend?" I ask.

"All right, I guess," Raj says looking down and kicking at the dirt.

"So, what do you think we're gonna have to show for it in 20 years?" I say picking up a rock and chucking it as far as I can.

"Don't know," he says shrugging. "Just living our lives, I guess."

"Yeah, well, I don't think that's gonna be good enough," I say, picking up another rock but not throwing it. I go on. "I keep hearing people say when you get to college you're just getting started on the rest of your life, but that's a bunch of bullshit. It's not the beginning. It's the fucking end if you're living someone else's dream. And that's what we're doing. We're living someone else's dream, Raj."

"OK, but what are we supposed to do?" he asks watching me chuck the rock out into the darkness.

"Don't you see, Raj?" I say moving closer. "Something happens when you keep denying what's at your core. Something happens when you deny the thing that's your very essence."

I watch him stare out into L.A.'s vast expanse.

"Raj," I say quietly to him. "Soon it'll be too late. You'll be married to someone you've never met before, and I'll be as bitter as everyone in my house. If we don't do this now, we'll hate ourselves for the rest of our lives."

He looks back at me and asks, "Do what?"

"For fuck's sake, Raj. Music. We're supposed to make music - you and me," I say feeling a rush scaling my windpipe. "I'm telling you, it's meant to be. Raj, look down there," I say taking off my hat and using it to point at all the shimmering lights. "Let's make every one of those motherfuckers down there know our name."

He doesn't say anything for a full minute. He just keeps staring out at all those lights before the words just tumble out: "Bill, I've wanted to call you and say the same thing for the past three months."

"And you know what?" I say, my eyes widening. "We're gonna be the ones who do it right. No groupies, no rock star poses, no ego trips."

I look at him until a smile creeps up that Raj can't hide.

"I'll call George," I say smiling.

The next morning, I phone George who's living in the dorms at UCLA. I hadn't talked to him since the summer.

Ring. "Hello?"

"George...Bill here."

"Que pasa, my friend," he says in his croaking morning voice. "How've you been?"

"Look, if I beat around the bush I might think twice."

"Well, you don't want that," he cracks.

"Listen, I hooked up with Raj last night. We were talking up there on top of the world, you know, up on Mulholland looking down at the whole city and everything. And man, I've been up there a million times, looked down and never saw any space for me. But last night it didn't look so scary and off limits."

"Oh-kay," he says trailing off.

I exhale deeply and fire my shot. "Look, school's become a joke. I'm only going for my grandfather. And, well, Raj and I were talking, and...we want to start a real band. The goddamn greatest band that's ever been."

George laughs nervously for a moment and then says soberly, "I can't believe you're saying this. I was lying on my bed just last night wanting to call you and say the same fucking thing."

The next week, the three of us gather in George's basement and write one song, "Like the City, a droning but jangly little lark. We record it onto a shitty little ghetto blaster. I still have the tape. I ask George's mom to take a picture of us together so the moment can be captured, certain this will be an important piece of rock history.

After that first rehearsal, we all walk up the steps of George's basement, and it's like we knew we'd just crossed over. We'd played a few parties together in high school but no one dared say it was for real back then. This was different and we could all feel it. Everything up to this day was someone else's, and now everything was in our own hands. When I get home, I write out ten targets I've set for the band with a little tagline under it: "Thanks be to music - the deepest mother, a lover, a soul mate, like no other...a gift from God, a spirit to haunt, an expressway to the soul - toll-free...for wounded hearts tired of lamenting."

How to Produce Music at Home

Preparing to Record:

So you've decided to record? By now your song should be well-practiced and smooth in performance, if you're going to record it all the way through. Some people prefer to work by recording pieces of their song first. Either way you need an organizational system in place that is logical.

SONIC BOOM EFFECT

Set up a file tree. A file tree is like making an outline for an essay; except with folders. Start by going to the hard drive you will be recording on and create a new folder called Project 1 for example. Now open that folder and create another folder named Raw Tracks. This is where you will save all of your tracks which are dry, meaning no effects. Each track should be recorded dry every time. Effects are added in the mixing stage. Each take for each track should be saved with a consecutive number after the track, and tracks should be saved as the instrument for their title. You can also make folders for the individual instruments you will be recording under Raw Tracks as such: Bass, Vocals, Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Harmonies, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Hi Hat, 16" Crash, 18" Crash, Ride, Tom 1, Tom 2, Floor Tom, Overhead 1, and Overhead 2, and Keyboards. I find this tedious to scroll through while in the mixing process, so I organize them into their own folders after I'm done mixing. Create a folder under the Project 1 folder called Wet Tracks. This is where you will place each track after you apply the effects, processing, normalization, and any automation you may use during the mixing process. Apply the same consecutive numbering system for each wet track take that you did with the dry track takes. This ensures that you can go back and listen to how different effects or processing adds or subtracts to your composition. Finally, make another folder under the Project 1 folder called Master. Again, as with the takes above, use a consecutive numbering system so that you can easily refer to each master. Get a notebook and take notes on all the settings for every change you make to each track. If you find that a compressor is set with too much threshold, then go back and change it and write down what the name of the compressor is, and where all the settings are for that specific track. Detailed notes make it easier to go back and apply your original settings in case of a lost or corrupt file. This should be done at every step in your recording process.

Microphone Placement for an Acoustic Drum Set:

Mic placement for acoustic drums is not a science, but an art. I will just lay out the rule of thumb for a basic kit and you, or the drummer, can go from there. There are many factors when considering mic placement such as room size, player dynamics, and the type of mic used.

Bass Drum: Right outside of the sound hole. If the head does not have one, then place it where one would be. (off-center) Snare Drum: Put mic about an inch from the head between the Toms at a 45 degree angle. If you want a mic for the bottom do the same (but point the mic up at a 45 degree angle!) Hi Hat: Place mic pointing away from the kit to the left of the post at a 45 degree angle about 3" away from the top cymbal. Leave room for the hat to open - you don't want it to hit the mic. Toms: Place a bit off-center at an 80 degree angle to the head around 3" away. Floor Tom (s): Place at a 45 degree angle, 3" away, and a bit off-center. Overheads: Around 2 & 1/2' from the Ride. Tip: adjust closer or further away for less or more (respectively) room sound. Listen back to a test recording of each microphone on solo to get an idea of how much bleed is coming through from other drums/cymbals. Adjust according to taste.

Getting The Most From Your Digital Audio Workstation:

Your DAW is the heart and soul of your studio. Treat it gently, and don't smoke or drink around it. Too many things can and will happen. The last thing you want is for someone to spill a beer on it. Water might be OK, but beer has a lot of sugar and other sticky stuff in it, so celebrate your perfect tracks outside of the studio.

Turn off your computer sounds and the internal microphone, and disable the internet if you're working on a computer. This ensures no interruptions and unwanted sounds creeping into your recordings. Disable sleep, hibernation, power saving, screen savers, and any other interruptions. Run a test recording first, making sure the latency is set correctly and your audio drivers are functioning properly. Adjust recording levels to peak at -1 dB. Load this test track down with processing and effects plugins. Don't process them on to the track, just insert them. The goal here is to find your limit of processing power so you know how many plugins you can run before a system crash. If you can, use another monitor in continuation mode. This will allow you to undock all of your features like plug ins, transport, and mixer so that you can concentrate on your track view without all of your panels in the way. Select your Raw Tracks folder to be the default save to folder. Make sure that either auto save is enabled or that you are in a habit of hitting control or command s after making edits. Remember to be taking notes also. Tip: some music stores sell a track notes notebook. Set up and name all of your tracks accordingly, making sure everything is routed properly, then save as a template using the same name as your project. If you have to start over, you'll be one step ahead of yourself.

Mixing:

Let me take a moment here to explain that mixing is different than mastering. Understanding this and applying techniques described herein will set you apart from all other "Independent" artists. The term mixing connotates multiple tracks, where mastering refers to a stereo two track (right & left). Just as in the examples of an outline and the file tree organizational system described above, mixing and mastering are sequential. Mixing happens before mastering. Mastering does not happen at the same time as mixing. Mixing is the art of blending multiple instruments to sound homogenous, meaning alike, or as one. That does not mean making a guitar sound like a drum kit. It involves adjusting the individual instruments volume, frequency, panning, effects, and other levels so that the focus is on the sound which all of them make together. This is called synergy (1+1=3). It creates something greater than itself which by itself it cannot attain. With that said, let's get on with mixing.

If you are going to automate your mix meaning for example having different effects fade in or out, or get stronger through time, make an automation track. Normalize your track to -1 dB. You have to be able to hear what you are working with. Anything above zero dB (decibel) will clip and sound distorted. You want the cleanest signal possible. If you have considerable space between when an instrument last sounded to it sounding again (a rest), select the blank space and process it to silence. This ensures no finger noises or breath or stool creaks creep into the track. Equalization is the single best way to reduce noise. Subtractive EQ is almost always better than additive EQ. EQ should be the first go to to correct your sound. Example: If you are working on a simple bass guitar track you can run a high pass filter or simply cut the high frequencies to - infinity dB. Try to only boost the used frequency range +2 or +3 dB. Any more than that can cause problems. Tip: To give vocals a punch use a low-shelf EQ filter around -3 dB at 150 Hz, then add 3 dB of gain to the whole track. Limiters can be set to -1 dB so your additions through EQ and FX don't exceed that and cause distortion. Compression can be tricky, but with a little bit of playing with you'll see they add that PUNCH you're looking for. Compressors have 4 main controls: 1. Threshold: A lower setting (measured in dB) means that a greater part of the signal will be treated and vise-versa. 2. Ratio: Determines the Input/Output ratio for signals higher than the Threshold. Example: A 5:1 ratio means that a signal overshooting the Threshold by +5 dB will leave the compressor +1 dB above the Threshold. 3&4: Attack & Release: Attack and Release settings determine how fast the Compressor acts on the incoming signal so as to maintain a more natural and curved response. Tip: If your particular Compressor has a meter, monitor what the Threshold turns down in dBs on the meter and adjust the Gain relative to that. This compensation evens out the signal. Noise Gates: These open & close to let sound through or block sound depending on their Threshold settings. Think of them as a valve, or hose bib. Gates do basically the same thing as the above mentioned trick with silencing an instrument rest point. They can be used to take out the bass drum bleed from a snare mic, or use corrective EQ to achieve the same results.

Plug Ins:

There are thousands of Plug Ins out there that do everything from effects to bit rate conversion. I use them for effects, spectral analysis, custom metering, processing, and a few in mastering. Plug Ins have to be recognized by your DAW; some manually, some are automatic. A little side note: RTAS are used for MAC based systems. Here's a list of some pro audio Plug Ins I use:

Izotope Ozone, Advanced RX2, Nectar, Spectron, and Alloy. Izotope products are all amazing pro audio repair, effects, and mastering Plug Ins. Demos are available at Izotope Blue Cat Audio: These are pro processing Plug Ins. They offer a free download, not a demo, which is awesome. Get it at Blue Cat Audio Waves: This is one expensive set, but well worth it. I use their plugs all of the time.

Mastering:

As I said earlier, mastering is different than mixing. Now that you have recorded and mixed your tracks down to a stereo track you are ready for mastering. Go ahead and normalize your file to -6 dB. This will leave you headroom to work with. Don't worry. When you're done with the mastering stage you normalize to -.5 dB. Headroom is just like it sounds. It is the space between where you are at and where you want to be in decibels.

In the mastering stage you'll want to do things like add a bit of compression, add a bit of EQ. You don't want to add a lot of anything. I think of it like cooking using spices. A dash of this, and a pinch of that. There really is no way to describe exactly what to do in mastering. You don't want to add stereo expansion, or brightness. You should do those things in the mixing stage. What you are aiming for is making all of your songs sound like they flow together. Do things like put them in the same "room", by adding a touch of reverb. You are also trying to make them sound good on all devices, so you'll want to burn a reference CD to play on a boom box, a car stereo, and your home system. Take notes on the differences in sonic qualities and strike a balance between them. Doing this will ensure good transfer.

Setting Up A Record Company:

The next thing you might think about doing after completing your project is setting up a record company. You can do this by going down to your local government building and getting a business license. You have different rights and protections with each different type of company. A sole proprietor gives you the individual little protection from a lawsuit, whereas a corporation is like an individual on its own, protecting your personal assets from judgements.

After your license you'll want to set up a business checking account so you can do business. Set up your website, and then start advertising your product.

Put Your Music On Amazon:

You can sell your albums and MP3's on Amazon by opening an account with Createspace. It's free to join, and all you have to do is upload your materials. You have to strictly follow their uploading guidelines; if you don't, your material won't be accepted. Make sure all of your artwork is in the correct formats along with your audio tracks. You might as well convert your.wav files to.aiff right now, and make sure your songs are in the correct order by placing an 01 etc. in front of the song titles. I would suggest signing up as an individual, not as a business because you never know when the economy will take a crap and out of business.

Too Human - Resistances, Armor, Dodging and Avoiding Death Strategies

If you've recently found yourself banging your head against your controller wondering why a game whose controls seem so simple can be so difficult and challenge, welcome to the real Too Human.
By the time you've reached level 50 and played a few online games, you've started to realize that there are a lot of things in Too Human that can kill you. Even if you have a few Epic pieces, you'll still find a challenge around every corner.
Fortunately, there are ways to increase your longevity and avoid the dreaded Valkyrie cut scene, not to mention the 2 million plus equipment repair bill.

Armor and Health

SONIC BOOM EFFECT

Pretty standard stuff here. The more Armor you have, the more damage you'll absorb. The more Health you have, the more damage you can sustain without a trip to Valhalla.

Dodging

Although it may seem odd that a missile exploding beside you won't hurt you as long as you curl into a ball and roll out of the way, that's the truth of it. Stop taking those missiles right in the noggin and simply roll away. This also works for Troll stomps.

The only thing this doesn't do is cause you to avoid status effects. So if a Troll has a Slow effect, you might escape the damage from the stomp, but the effect will still hit you. Jumping will help you avoid both, but don't try jumping into oncoming missiles...I've made that mistake one too many times.

Resistances

Not all attacks are equal. It's a good idea to get familiar with what kind of damage each type of mob in Too Human causes.

Goblins cause Slash Damage.

Dark Elves cause Piercing Damage.

Trolls cause Blunt Damage.

Undead cause Blunt Damage.

So what does this all mean? Well if you find yourself fighting in Helheim against the Undead often, it's generally a good idea to try and max out your Blunt Resistance. The same applies for Dark Elves and Piercing Resistance. Increase the proper resistances or even having multiple sets of gear depending on the situation, will help you negate a lot of incoming damage and increase the likelihood you'll survive the encounter.

AOE Defensive Charms

Try equipping and activating charms that will do Area of Effect (AOE) procs. For instance, I use the Gravity Well Charm combined with an EMP Pulse Charm. This does two things, if I'm causing a whack of hits, chances are a Gravity Well will open up and suck everyone up...boom I lived with very little effort! If that doesn't proc, and I start getting hit, my EMP pulse will go off stunning everyone around me and allowing me to make a quick withdrawal.

Think of different combinations to suit your style and you'll be rocking any level you want in no time.

Grand Theft Auto 4 - Great Info Regarding This Game

Story, Basic Info

Niko Bellic, a European who traveled by boat to Liberty City (Game version of New York City). He was persuaded by his cousin Roman to come to the city. He expected to live in a mansion and live the life of fast cars, beautiful women, and a luxurious and delightful life. When Niko drives to the beautiful mansion he sees that this mansion is just a small ran down apartment in Hove Beach. Niko meets Michelle a backstabbing Beech as you will find out later in the game. This game has a lot of different outcomes. I do not want to spoil the game for you. The first thing I would do to get a little heat AKA some guns is run over or beat the shit out of a police officer, take his 9mm. Once you have this weapon go save. You will be introduced to one of Roman's friends, Little Jacob who will supply you with a weapon, 9mm. If you want some heat early on just kill some cops. What I did is retrieved the pistol went up the stairs and crouched with a wanted level watch the cops open the door run up the stairs and killed them. After my health went down to a minimum where I felt I would die I saved, woke up and found most of that ammo, shotguns, machine guns, and carbine assault rifles. I had the SWAT and F.I.B. after me so I saved and picked up those weapons.

SONIC BOOM EFFECT

Combat Tips:

Think of this game as real life in a way. Don't just stand there! If you have heavy fire from multiple enemies how the hell are you going to take them all out? Definitely not all at once right? Put it this way, do you think the army goes out to combat running and shooting at their enemy? No, for the most part no. In this game and in real life combat you need to have tactics. get some cover, find a strategy that works for you. I could take out 20 guys sometimes and still have a fair amount of armor left. Because I used whatever I could for cover. Dumpsters, walls, whatever. Once they popped their head out- BOOM 50 caliber bullet fired from the desert eagle left them slumped on the floor!! What I am saying is if you know you are about to have a difficult mission take cover and come with a new vest of armor before every mission unless its less than 50 percent damaged. Use you assault rifles for longer distant shots when faced with a heavy load and pistols. shotguns, and SMG's for closer enemies. If you need to take out enemies that are near a whole bunch of cars, why not throw a little handy grenade and blow them all to smithereens? Taking heavy fire can very well damage your armor and health within a few seconds. Taking cover isn't a sissy move, it's a smart and tactical move. They are using cover so you should be obligated to that right as well. If you don't want to wastes too much ammo try crouching for better accuracy with your weapons. And don't worry about how many rounds you wasted, you will gain atleast 50 percent of that ammo from the fallen enemies, so try to use the same weapons as they are if you can see the weapons they are using.

So now the basic tips to succeeding in this awesome game:

Keep Saves; I kept 3. Make sure you have full health and body armor if available before missions if possible. When you can take girlfriends or friends on dates, do it. 90 percent of the friends you meet that you can take on dates have valuable perks. I suggest getting them to 100 percent fondness so if you can't make it you can go back on a date once more to get that 100 percent. Don't worry about all the fast cars early in the game. You will be granted the Comet and Infernus later in the game. The Turismo is always spawned at Faustin's house even after is unfortunate loss.

This game is wonderful. I love GTA 4, however compared to GTA San Andreas there are no tanks, airplanes, and no vehicle mods such as nitrous from what I have observed. There are beautiful fast cars that look nice but modifying vehicles in GTA San Andreas was awesome. I also liked recruiting my own members for help in San Andreas however in this game you can call Dwayne for goons if you decide to kill another character, sparing Dwayne's life.

The Pro's: Internet, Dating as well as SA, Fast Cars, better interactions with characters, graphics, driving controls can take a while to get used to but when traveling at high speeds you get blurry, drinking and driving, a lot of activities/hobbies to participate with friends and girlfriends.

Weapons:

Pistols:

9mm- 17 round magazines, decently powerful, faster fire rate than the Combat Pistol (Desert Eagle) semi-auto.

Desert Eagle- Very powerful pistol, hard to find;google location when you get to Bohan. Favorite weapon in the game. Substitutes for 9mm ammo. Semi-auto.

Machine Guns-

Micro SMG- (MAC 11)

50 round clip- very fast and loud weapon, personally my favorite out of the 2, because of larger mags and fire rate. Great damage. Automatic

SMG-30 round mags. Maybe more powerful, not as fast firing as Mac 11. Automatic

Assault Rifles-

AK-47- 30 round mag, great looking, powerful, ching sound. Automatic

Carbon Assault- Powerful, ugly weapon. 30 round mags. Stronger than the AK-47 but I prefer the AK.

Shotties-

SPAS- Powerful, slow fire rate, horrible range. Semi-auto. 8 round shells.

Combat Shotgun- Very powerful, decent range, semi-auto, 10 round, I see this shotgun as a very fast shooting weapon for a shotgun that is ( I once got blasted and killed by the triads with this one. Thought it was the SPAS but later found out when used on Roman's cab driver with all his mad shit talk.)

Pack-SUM-Punch!

Molotov- Wine bottle on fire that will catch anything in it's path on fire once made contact with

Grenade- A small bomb that can be thrown and will explode in your hand if you don't release it soon enough. This handy bomb can blow up vehicles and create a domino effect if the cars are close enough to each other creating fun multiple explosions and also some difficult stars to avoid if the explosions continue.

TIP: Try not to throw grenades out of a car unless you are moving, and grenades inflict a great amount of damage to your enemy and yourself, be careful with the nifty little devices as they can hurt you just as much as the enemy.

(Just for fun I tossed a grenade on the ground, it blew up and wiped out all my armor and 10 percent of my health with one grenade)

Rocket Launcher A.K.A. RPG: Fast non targeting missle blowing anything in its path when hit, such as cars, humans, and helicopters! I love the RPG but I didn't use it unless needed for a mission such as helicopters. Why? Ammo for these things are quite expensive, I know its a game but I would still rather buy a couple suits from Perseus instead of a couple rockets!

There are several weapons and ammo that can be found throughout Liberty City, I generated these tips and guide from my own knowledge of the game, for the most part most of this is right however I am not 100 percent sure everything is correct, again I created this blog from my own knowledge of the game.

Non-Firing/Explosive weapons:

Baseball Bat- A fine, silent piece of wood to knock heads with instead of baseballs!

Fists- Some silent knuckles that are very deadly if used multiple times.

Knife- Great for shanking Taxi drivers after they charge you a fee for the ride! Taxi drivers actually hold more money than you pay for the ride after they are swimming in blood on the concrete.

TIP: Little Jacob can be useful along this game for discounted prices on weapons. He doesn't carry Desert Eagle's as far as I know.

Main Characters and their perks:

Brucie Kibbutz- Roman's steroid abusing, lavish lived friend. He is weird in a way but he has alot of racing and car connects. He is focused about his looks and has some feminine ways. However this guy will eventually meet you to a rare car: the Comet. You will have to win first in a race mission for Brucie and afterwords he says you can keep the comet so I did, which he borrowed from his friend, Stevie which you will later interact with through missions.

Perk: Free Helicopter Ride when respect and like stat are raised to a certain level around 70 percent. Kind of like Roman's Taxi Cab driver- without the shit talk.

Dwayne Forge- This character is optional. If you decide to kill Dwayne Forge you cannot gain access to his Backup perk which sends 2 goons to help you out wherever you are whether in free roam or a difficult mission. I rarely used this perk, but just the way Playboy backstabbed his long time friend who just got released from prison bothered me. Playboy knew Dwayne taught him the ropes and helped him achieve where he was at in that point of his life. Killing Playboy in my opinion is rather sweet. I get a new outfit from GTA 3 that Alex Chilton likes besides all the Perseus crap, which I also like. I get a real friend who really has no other friends and is from the lower class struggling in the "hood". I get Playboy's loft and two extra car slots, which came in handy to fulfill my nifty car collection consisiting of: The Infernus, Banshee, Comet, Super GT, and Turismo my favorite supercars and also I believe the fastest and best looking in the game. Playboy also drops a Desert Eagle but the game glitched on me so I had to find it at a different location in Bohan. Yes, it is a game but in life and this game reality is very similar making choices and looking at personalities and how people treat other people. Dwayne is a good friend in this game, and once Playboy became rich he became an arrogant snob which I could see. He was a fake character as we all I am sure have encountered in real life.

Little Jacob- I personally like Little Jacob more than Roman. Jacob introduces you to your first weapon unless you've went around looking for red glowing guns throughout the first island, or you've killed a couple of cops and F.I.B. crouching on top of the stairs shooting the fat pigs while they run up the stairs, get shot, and break their back on the way down. Little Jacob is relevant in several important missions with Niko. He is Jamaican however he is very chill, laid back, but respectful friend. He needs help delivering "drug" packages which I think is marijuana which I also enjoyed a few years back. I suggest taking Jacob out to activities because you can use him to aquire cheaper weapons and armor which becomes useful throughout the game.

Perk: Meets you close to your vincinity in his Lowrider Jamaican style vehicle with a trunk filled with useful pieces of steel and lead, and also my favorite! ARMOR. Jacob also has significant reduced prices compared to the underground weapon dealers of course we know why (Dimitri introduced you to these underground arms dealers) and we all know when he is involved with something- it's just shit.

Roman- Cousin, Cousin, Cousin. I'm surprised he can actually maintain and taxi service after all the gambling and waste of money and problems he affiliates Niko with. It's his addiction, which brought Niko into some trouble as well. While we are on addictions, I'm sure we all have some type of addiction, not saying I'm some crack feign or anything. Whether it's candy, food, money, cigarettes whatever. Ok back to the point, Roman has a free taxi cab service for you and he also offers Taxi Missions for side money and raise his respect but they aren't needed to 100 percent completion, because you can do a million taxi fares if you like. I gained a fair amount of laughter at the cab driver and he will remain the same no matter how many times you kill him or steal his upgraded Taxi later in the game.

Packie Mcreary- Kate Mcreary's Brother, the one who is killed because you don't want your cousin to die. Figured I would tell you this before you saved your game and found out your cousin dies. Well anyways Packie offers many missions and is met through Elizabeta which really has no relevance other than a cocaine snorting fat ass. Anyways Packie is a friend who can offer car bombs for sale once completed his missions and has enough Respect and Like stat just like the other characters. See how this is turning out, every main character besides Niko offers a perk of some sore. Anyways Kate does not offer perks and I wasn't able to ever score, shes ugly anyways.

Francis Mcreary- Francis is part of the Mcreary family. I didn't like Francis but I kept him for his 3 star wanted level removal since he is a cop, and killed Michael, a heroin addicted brother of the Mcreary's. I'm still not sure why I decided to kill Michael since I had Kiki to remove those stars for me. But if you call Francis before the assassination he will pay double, eithr way this an option, kill for perks or kill based on your decision. Either way Francis is a dirty, scumbag cop, but he didn't get in my way and wasn't nearly as bad as Dimitri. And no you cannot take Francis out on activities, like I would hang out with a cop anyways, with all the money, stolen cars, and illegal firearms in my possession.

This wraps up all the Characters with perks besides the Girlfriends I've already posted. Thanks for your time.
