The Yamaha recording custom is one of the the longest running drum set lines in the Yamaha range. It was one of the drum sets that really made Yamaha stand out in the drum making industry as a leader. Here, we'll cover some of the features and the sound in a short review.
First, we'll look at the build. The recording custom has been made from a high quality birch which is ideal for studio drumming. The shells are are fairly standard thickness at 7 plys and 6 plys for the tom toms. There aren't any problems with the shells directly either, and the edges are well cut.
SONIC BOOM EFFECT
Some of Yamaha's best hardware has been used for the recording custom, such as the YESS tom tom system that produces an increased vibration from the drums, and the very functional ball and clamp holders. But, the colors available to pick from are a little bit limiting. For example, you can choose red or black...that's it. They do look great, but many drummers who are looking for a more bombastic finish will be disappointed.
The birch wood makes the Yamaha recording custom sharp and punchy sounding with a quick sustain. The bass drum is one of the best parts of the set and has a very deep boom about it. It does resonate well too, but some padding inside the shell helps to get the fattest focused notes from it.
All of the toms are good to play too, especially the floor toms that are lush, deep, dark, and defined. The whole set is not too tough to tune up, and it'll work well in many styles like rock, funk, jazz, hip hop, and the list goes on really! The set does cost quite a bit to buy new compared to other pro-level birch sets, but you do get your money's worth. Of course, buying a well looked after second hand kit is an option as well.
