Gone Are the Days-Revitalizing Sales Reps for the New Century

It's the new millennium - has selling really changed? Is the evolution of change something we as sales people in distribution really need to focus on? Is sales in the New Century really so different that the concept of pioneering a territory and then servicing the customer as a life annuity has gasped its final breath? The answer to those questions is yes. So, now what do we do to prepare ourselves to pass through this time warp and become "A" players in the New Century?

BEING AN "A" PLAYER IN THE NEW CENTURY

SONIC BOOM EFFECT

As an "A" player in the New Century you must build business-to-business relationships through channels that other team members can service. The special buyer/salesman relationship isn't dead, golf is still allowed, entertainment is still acceptable, but the degree to which these tools are used has changed. Certainly, the focus and the gray matter behind the sales planning process must contribute more to the long-term goals of the organization. The sales representative in the New Century ensures that their products, their services and their company becomes the channel of choice. The primary objective is the same. "First Call and Last Look," but the methodology has evolved to a higher level. Transactions are no longer managed by the field sales representative.

FOCUS HAS CHANGED

Focus must now be on planning for the development of new customers and increased penetration of current high potential customers. The main responsibility of the salesman in the New Century is NOT TO INCREASE SALES, but to systematically and consistently increase the number of customers that call you D.O.C., (Distributor Of Choice). If you truly practice solution medicine for your customers, if you find their pain and make it go away, you will become their D.O.C. That means you'll always get the first call and the last look.

THE REALITY TEST

How do you know if you made it through the time warp? How do you know if you are or can become an "A" player in the New Century? Answering the following questions should give you a clue.

o Do you know the 5 largest customers of your 5 largest customers?

o What are the 3 largest sources of pain in their lives?

o What are your customers' key profit and growth drivers?

o What are you doing with the knowledge?

o How would the customer describe your efforts to improve their business?

THREE BASIC COMPETENCIES OF THE "A" PLAYER IN THE NEW CENTURY

"A" sales people in the New Century learn to develop Achievement Competencies, Influence Competencies and Thinking Competencies.

1) Achievement Competencies

Achievement competencies focus on results. They help you understand the concept of planning and creating strategies with effective action plans that support corporate objectives. They help you target high potential customers and lock onto that customer's growth objectives with laser-like clarity. They promote creativity empowerment and initiative.

2) Influence Competencies

Sales people in the New Century no longer hit the road trying to meet a quota for the number of calls per day. The "A" player of the New Century focuses on multiple contacts within an account, seeking to match his company resources, including people, to his clients' needs. He targets his persuasion techniques, maximizes his personal impact and works hard to improve organizational awareness on both sides of the sales equation. The "A" player in the New Century promotes Tier Level Selling in his customer's organization as well as his own organization.

3) Thinking Competencies

The New Century Salesmen is a quick thinker. When he shoots from the hip, it's from a knowledge base that doesn't expose his company to undo risk. He can think outside the box and practices scenario planning within his own territory analysis to prepare himself for the future. He is a short-term planner and long-term strategic thinker.

"A" PLAYER RESULTS AND HABITS

The "A" salespersons in the New Century are always striving for improvement. They gain the majority of their targeted customers' business. They increase market share. Transactions flow through a well-managed relationship that they have established. Their time is focused on growth rather then transactional service (the team and the system do the servicing).

The "A" player of the New Century constantly seeks to enhance their selling skills and the knowledge base of the industry they serve. They no longer focus on product knowledge. They focus on their customers' products and industry knowledge. They have fine-tuned the basic habits of success.

o The habit of prospecting

o The habit of planning

o The habit of using a professionally prepared sales presentation

o The habit of goal-setting

o The habit of record-keeping

o The habit of efficient time control

o The habit of self-development

o The habit of continuous development of their industry knowledge

o The habit of self discipline

GONE ARE THE DAYS

Salesmanship in the New Century has changed. Gone Are The Days of selling features and benefits. Today you must understand how your customer makes money and match the benefits of your product to his profit-making activities.

Gone Are The Days of developing a personal relationship as the key to success. Selling in the New Century still requires that personal relationship but it must be expanded upon. You must become a business consultant and an advisor to your customer in this century.

Gone Are The Days when your focus was on your product and services. You must now focus on industry knowledge. You must become an expert in the industry to provide real value to your customer in the New Century.

Gone Are The Days that you dribble from the mouth creating rambling conversations and making unsolicited scripted presentations. "A" players in the New Century listen more than 80% of the time. I mean really listen and understand the customer's real concerns. They look for opportunities to solve problems, to take the pain away.

Gone Are The Days of salesmen being high paid apologists. Sales in the New Century require quality and service as a given to enter the game.

C2 = SALES SUCCESS

C2 means knowing and understanding your customer's customer. To become an "A" player in the New Century you must get involved with your customer's customer. New Century Sales requires that you strive to bring your customer more customers. It requires an understanding of their capital structure and suggestions on your part to make them more efficient. It requires your help in introducing them to new markets.

Gone Are The Days that you compete with price, service and quality alone. Sales in the New Century depend on your understanding of the difference between price and cost. More importantly, sales success in the New Century depends on your ability to educate your customers on the difference between price and cost.

Gone Are The Days of "Three Bids and A Buy." The purchasing mentality of your customers has changed. Innovations in their purchasing practice forces innovation in your selling practice. Today you must seek, document and get signed agreements from your customers on cost savings. You must focus on working capital reductions, direct expense reductions, indirect expense reductions (redevelopment of personnel), system reliability, inventory management and logistics solutions that contribute profits to their bottom line. Reduction of Your Gross Profit Is Not An Acceptable Cost Reduction.

MUST I BECOME BIONIC?

"A" players are not super humans. They simply focus their efforts on success. Ask yourself the following questions.

o What are your Customers' Key skill sets? (What are they really good at?)

o What would your customer's customer say they really value from your customer?

Ask these same questions of your own company.
Remember, in some cases "Loser Customers" deal with "Loser Distributors." They often form a mutual admiration society. "A" players in the New Century quickly learn to recognize Loser Customers and refuse to waste valuable time on them.

Take the time to really understand value added selling. Recognize its power in generating much more volume than the Old Century approach. The key is to completely separate selling goals from being genuinely helpful and understanding your customer's business. Real value added selling focuses on helping customers solve their problems, without trying to make a sale. Remember that Value Added is defined by the customer, its goals and its business.

BEAM ME UP SCOTTIE

This may all sound Inter Galactic, overwhelming and you may even think,
"What's The Use?

I know how to sell. I'm good at it and I've been doing it for years."

Well, chances are you may be absolutely correct. You see, things didn't change overnight. When the clock struck 12:01am at the turn of the century, there wasn't a Big Flash, a Sonic Boom or a Major Revelation on how we as distributors are to change our practices or the way we go to market. The truth of the matter is that we have been going through an evolutionary process throughout the nineties, accelerated by improving technology and information distribution. The point is, if you were an "A" player sales person in the 90's, then chances are you have learned and practiced many of the techniques discussed in this article. Now, all you have to do is to continue to learn and refine your skills. If you haven't changed your style, learned new practices based on improved customer intelligence, and if you still believe in the sales model developed in the old century, you are probably struggling to maintain market share. Seek out additional training and advice. Look for a mentor. I'm betting that the majority of the readers fall into the first category. You have been involved in the evolutionary process and you are eager to face the challenges of the new century.

To paraphrase Wayne Gretsky, "You want to skate to where the puck's going to be."

I'll add, "Seek to arrive with an attitude - an attitude of success."

Paris to New York in 2 Hrs - New Super Sonic Business Jet

Imagine flying at speeds of up to 2,664mph - Mach 3.6 (twice as fast as Concorde) onboard a private jet with 20 other fellow passengers. Nobody has ever travelled that fast before. Flying from Paris to New York would take less than 2 hours and London to Sydney in three and a half hours. SonicStar is set to achieve these world record passenger flight times with it's new futuristic VIP jet.

The project was founded by HyperMachs CEO Richard Lugg. HyperMach claim that the SonicStar will be 30 per cent more fuel efficient than the Rolls-Royce engines which were used on it's predecessor - The Concord. It will also fly at twice the speed of the Concord - radically cutting journey times. High tech light weight materials such as composite metals and titanium will be used in the build of the aircraft to reduce weight and maintain structural integrity.

SONIC BOOM EFFECT

HyperMach have named the propulsion system: S-MAGJET. Unlike conventional jet engines the S-MAGJET system is based on a hybrid gas turbine engine technology. This will dramatically lower it's Carbon Footprint.

HyperMach SonicStar Specification:

  • Maximum cruise speed - Mach 3.6
  • Long-range cruise speed - Mach 3.1
  • High-speed cruise speed - Mach 3.4
  • Engines - Two SonicBlue S-MAGJET Hybrid Supersonic 4000-X Series
  • Landing distance - 4,800ft
  • Range - 6,000 nautical miles
  • Highest Altitude - 62,000ft
  • Length - 64metres
  • Height at maximum - 2.6metres
  • Width at maximum - 2.7metres

An electromagnetic current will be passed across the fuselage to suppress the sonic boom. This means that at supersonic thrust speed - spectators on the ground will not hear a supersonic boom. This technology empowers the super plane to overcome the noise regulations that currently restrict supersonic travel.

The British Department of Trade and Industry is investing in the project and the plane is set to be airborne in 2021. The project will have a huge impact on both the commercial and private aviation sector and no doubt create thousands of jobs. The sheer demand for an aircraft of this type will result in most mainstream jet manufacturers being forced into manufacturing rival jets of this calibre. In the future many private jets may be able to travel at super sonic speed.

The SonicStar will revolutionise private jet charter by cutting journey times making more achievable in the business day. Until 2021, jet operators and jet charter consultancy firms will have wait until the SuperSonic is released.

The Bad, The Loud, And The Proud

I really like it when I see a car, looking terrible, old, rusted, and dirty, with the speakers just booming, and some young kid driving it. HAH! What a way to make my day. It is clear where some peoples priorities lie. Most of the younger crowd would rather have booming subwoofers, big crazy speakers, and grade A stereo decks, than a nice car.

So let me get this straight - If the average 17 year old, generally males, had 1000 dollars to put towards a vehicle, they would spend 300 on the car and 700 on the speaker system. CRAZYNESS!

SONIC BOOM EFFECT

"Aw dude, check out this stereo.... Awesome sound". Yeah, thats swell man, but your car only has 3 wheels. To the more "mature" crowd, sound would be a ridiculus choice over vehicle type. How cool do those kids think they are in there busted cars booming down the road, with their hat on backwords, in an undershirt, with music on louder than than the average person can even handle from the outside of the vehicle? It's clear how cool they look....

Exhaust is another one. 300 dollar car, 800 dollar exhaust. And if not full exhaust, then a boom can. This must be so that they have an excuse for loud music. "I gotta be able to hear the tunes over the car man". Brutal. Poor kids. They save up for things like these. Seriously. So now they have 1800 dollars into a car that is worth 300, and the resale is terrible - if at all possible - so they drive it till it dies and start all over with a new one. How hard are they qoing to be kicking themselves when they find out it is a losing investment? Poor kids...

5 Methods of Joining Plastic Parts to Each Other

Making plastic parts is one of the most efficient ways to design and manufacture parts. In numerous cases these days, it is necessary to join two or more plastic parts together. Fortunately there are a wide variety of ways you can do this. I want to show you five of the best ways to accomplish this just like the pros and not like the other guys.

Before we discuss the exact methods you will need some information about what you are trying to accomplish. Why is this important? To choose the best method to join two parts you must know exactly why the parts need to be joined. There is a big difference depending on your design needs how the part should go together. Here some examples of things to look at on your list of requirements.

SONIC BOOM EFFECT

  • Are the parts permanently or temporarily joined (example: a door for batteries
  • How often do the parts need to be separated (if not permanent)
  • How much dust resistance and/ or waterproofness are needed if any?
  • Is the product used where it will touch sensitive areas of the human body? (medical instruments, toys or eating utensils)
  • Will the part be subjected to heating and cooling? (like in a car parked outside)
  • How much time is required to assemble the parts?
  • Will the parts be machine assembled?

Make a list of your requirements which will help you find the best way to find out how to proceed. Now let us get to some solutions.

Using screws is a very common way to assemble plastic parts. The advantages are that anyone with the ability to turn a screw can assemble the parts. Screws can be used to join plastic parts to different materials like metals and composites. This is also easy for smaller volumes. That said one disadvantage is that it costs more time, money and labor as the number of parts increases. Assembly labor or expensive machinery is required for high volumes. Screws do allow for disassembly but wear out the screw pocket if the product is disassembled frequently. Using some adhesive will lock in the screw.

The general practice is to have the hole molded on one part for the screw to go through. The part to be joined to the first will have a pilot hole. The pilot hole is smaller than the screw threads. When the screw is first driven into the pilot hole it will cut into it. This gives a strong joint for the screw to clamp both parts together. Using a metal insert can increase strength of the joint and allow more frequent disassembly.

As a general rule use screws with fat heads like a pan head or button head screw. Flat head screws should not be used as the cone shape head will over stress the plastic. Be cautious if you are joining rubber parts with screws.

One of the most popular methods for joining two plastic pieces is using hooks. A hook, sometimes called a snap, looks like a barb on a fishing hook. This hook snaps into a slot in the part it is being joined to. A hook can be setup for either a permanent or temporary joint.

If the hook is shaped like a fish hook with a very pointed barb, and the slot is not accessible that is ideal for a permanent joint. Toys and small appliances frequently use this attachment method.

If you want a removable joint, like a battery cover, the hook should have no back angle so it acts more like a detent. A detent is better if the parts must be removed a put back together. One good example of this is a Fastex buckle which can be found at here. You probably have seen these on luggage, baby seats and outdoor gear.

Adhesives can be used to join parts easily as well. Adhesives, like epoxy, are not only good at bonding plastics but can be used to bond plastics to metal, composite, or ceramic. If correctly selected, the joint can also seal water, dust and other contaminates out. Since each adhesive is different, follow the directions and warnings given by the adhesive manufacturer. You should consider using adhesives as permanent.

Be careful when selecting adhesives if the product will experience hot and cold temperatures in regular cycles. Some adhesives will be better choices depending on the conditions the product is subjected to. Be sure to look at which materials you are bonding and make sure the adhesive will work with all parts to be bonded. Special care should be taken with adhesives if the parts they are used on come in contact with sensitive body parts.

On approach that gets over looked is to not have separate parts at all. Storage boxes can use a living hinge to allow the box and lid to be molded as one part. One example is this battery box. Living hinges are a great way to simplify no matter if you plan to make a 100 or 1 million parts. Material selection is very important with living hinges so do your homework. Living hinges are generally a good way to attach parts but special steps must be taken if the hinge is permanently bent.

In a high volume production setting, sonic welding can be a fast and inexpensive method to joint two parts. In many cases the two parts are mirrored (they often are the left and right halves of some larger part) giving the parts a natural joining area. Sonic welding requires both parts to be specially designed for the task and requires a sonic welder. Once you have the proper machinery and setup, welding the material takes a few seconds. As with other methods, check to see if the materials will join together. Sonic welding makes good joints but can sometimes not align the parts exactly. The designer should make allowances for any misalignment that may occur.

Now that you know about these five methods of joining plastics part together and understand what you need to know before you choose one of them let review what I have said here. Make sure you know whether a joint is permanent or temporary. Check to see what the other requirements are. Select the method that best suits your needs.
