Defining the Doppler Effect

Have you ever noticed the way sound changes as it passes by you? The sound of a car horn as the car drives past? Notice how the pitch changes? This is what is known as the Doppler Effect.

The frequency of the sound waves determines the pitch. Sound travels at a constant velocity of 340.29 m/s, but since the wavelength of the sound wave can change, so can the frequency. When an object is stationary, the sound waves that emanate from the object all have the same wavelength, and so therefore have the same frequency. But when an object is moving, the wavelengths of the sound waves moving in the same direction as the object shorten, resulting in the a higher frequency. You perceive this as a higher-pitched sound. After the object passes you and begin to move away, the wavelengths lengthen, resulting in a lower frequency and pitch.

SONIC BOOM EFFECT

The Doppler Effect is the sound of this transition from high to low pitch as a result of the object's movement. The same concept applies to breaking the sound barrier. When an object moves at 340.29 m/s, it is traveling at the speed of sound. Once it moves faster than the speed of sound, the waves overlap, resulting in constructive interference. This is what creates a sonic boom.

When one begins to understand how sound works, it becomes evident that sound is not always what it seems. Suppose you're driving, and your favorite song comes on the radio. You begin singing at the top of your lungs, at a note you perceive to be 465 Hz. But a passerby hears the note at 473 Hz. What you perceive to be 465 Hz is as true as the passerby's perception of it being 473 Hz. The same sound can be perceived in an infinite number of ways, depending on the motion of the object and the one perceiving it. So really, sound comes down to perception.

Of course, only in relation to pitch. The loudness and timbre are not controlled by motion. The speaker controls that.

And if any of you have watched CBS's the Big Bang Theory, you should remember Dr. Sheldon Cooper's representation of the Doppler Effect. It consisted of a black and white vertically striped costume, presumably sound waves, and a verbal representation. It went a little something like this, "Neeeeaaaaooo!" followed by a smile both joyous and incredibly naive. If you've seen the show, you know what I mean.

Has Google Earth Destroyed the Aerial Photography Business?

Google Earth is a great resource, and yet one of the most controversial things online. Mostly due to the fact that people enjoy their privacy, and do not like aerial pictures of their properties; they find it intrusive. So too, do many governments of the world, some of which are trying to hide things, others that are trying to keep various assets safe, and some that are definitely rogue nations with something to hide.

Drug Dealers despise Google-Earth big time and do not wish to have their lavish estates photographed, and very wealthy, but very honest individuals would like to leave well enough alone, and do not wish to engage the Internet Surfing version of the paparazzi. Indeed, everyone, including the innocent and the not so innocent has at least some apprehension about Google-Earth.

SONIC BOOM EFFECT

Most would agree that even so, it is a good tool to have and it keeps large corporations, governments, and others honest with regards to the environmental concerns and what they are up too. Most folks believe in transparency, and nothing could be more transparent than an aerial photo. Of course, with every new type of technology that is brought to the public, it will send shock waves to the old way of doing things, and this one has definitely sent a sonic boom to those who specialize in Aerial Photography.

Not many people are aware of this, and indeed, the only reason I am is that before retirement, I was a big consumer of aerial photographs, over lays, maps, and such. We used them when strategically looking for clientele and planning our marketing plans within a city or target zone. A full size aerial map could costs 0s of dollars, and we spent 10s of thousands of dollars on them each quarter.

Real Estate Developers, land speculators, civil engineers, large corporations, and government entities were also very big consumers of aerial-maps. Aerial Photography Companies made over half their money this way, while also taking specialty photos while flying over the homes, buildings, and areas for a specific consumer.

Since 50% or more of their income was aerial map type photographs most of them have gone out of business now. Often it was a couple of people and an airplane owner, and a nice little small business. Generally, there was one in every county in the US and 2 or more in every major city.

Today it is difficult to find such specialists, and it is rather unfortunate, but indeed, this is the price of progress, so please consider this.

If that hadn't happened, I would be able to clear the mission with my overlevelled Illusionist so that everyone is ready to take part in the next storyline mission. As a consequence of that mishap, I was forced to enter a mission with a Thief that knows Steal: EXP and have all my EXP stolen, which, I assure you, was not the easiest process of all. This mission was not hard at all, especially owing to my preparation. Everyone in my party had been taught Damage = MP, and I feel it is appropriate to include a single section to this ability, as we are going to rely on it a lot during this challenge. Damage = MP is an ability accessible to all humans, nu mous and moogles. As long as they have at least some MP (more than 0), damage will be done to the MP (as opposed to HP). There are many occassions during which Damage = MP will prove ineffective. For instance, certain moves bypass R-Abilities. They are not particularly strong, however, against a level 2 team, it hardly matters. Whatever hits at this point - kills.
